Saturday morning….more snow last night….not much….and the ground is shrouded in a clean white coat….as our the trees….the sun is shining….brightly reflected by the whiteness all around….

All is peaceful….but my thoughts on on another peaceful tranquil time:

Time spent out on the water in a canoe….meandering around small creeks or rivers in the backcountry….the lush fresh greenery of spring surrounding our journey.

Or out on the water of a lake in the summer, with the sun shining down from above, forming intricate light patterns in the barely rippling water.

Later sitting by a campfire in the twilight of the day….next to the lake….waters reflecting the end of day….while watching the sun set.

Early the next morning setting out through a misty shroud….again out on the water as the day comes to life….the early dawn peeking through the mist….then a loon suddenly appearing off to the side….its haunting call announcing the waking day.

The day finally fully awake….blue skies and puffy white clouds above….following the course of the waterway….silently passing through lush greenery….once again meandering along what others might consider a ‘backwater’….finally coming to a part of the river you’ve been following too shallow and swift to continue on….so you portage.

But suddenly you have entered into yet another season….leaving the green of summer behind….finding the vivid colours of autumn….colours reflected in the water….caught in the slightly rippling waves….even in the wake of your canoe….undulating colours on the watery surface….fallen leaves floating serenely by.

Out on a lake, the surrounding hills forming a panorama alive with colours….out on the water passing by a rocky island with majestic pine trees….the haunting call of the loon somewhere far off in the distance….coloured leaves caught in the breeze along the shore….further on our trip, the colours of autumn continue along the banks of a rushing river….the cascade of colour offset by the cascading waters, rushing over rocks.

Leaving the canoe behind, we fast forward to a wintery scene….the force of a waterfall in a white wonderland….snowy banks meeting icy outcrops….roaring waters meeting ice covered rocks….frozen islands in time….the ice covered river below the waterfall showing cracks from the pressure of the current….or the promise of the spring soon to come….but before leaving this winter postcard, we see the rushing waters mingling with the frozen rock, layered in ice….powerful, sublime in the snowy vastness.

These are segments of a trip, mostly by canoe, you can take anytime on YouTube….as seen on Dan Gibson’s Solitudes 25 Natural Beauty:

Paddles up until later then….check out this video….and take a trip some winter day yourself….through the seasons in canoe country….maybe even today….
